1. Solar Impulse

In 2009, the Solar Impulse, the world’s first practical solar airplane, was unveiled. The Solar Impulse project had a specific goal in mind – to show that an airplane could fly non-stop for a complete day-night-day cycle using only solar energy.

The aircraft was planned to have 36 hours of non-stop flight and underwent fine-tuning on the ground before its first test flights. The first complete night flight was programmed for 2010 and was scheduled to take place over Switzerland. This revolutionary airplane was expected to change the aviation industry.

2. Helios
Helios is an airplane designed by NASA that operates on solar power and is primarily used for conducting scientific research. It is a solar UAV with a top speed of 27 mph and a wingspan of 247 feet.

The Helios Prototype set a world altitude record for propeller-driven aircraft of almost 97,000 feet before its loss in an in-flight mishap in June 2003. It had 62,000 solar cells and 14 brushless direct-current electric motors.

3. Centurion
Centurion is one of the best Solar Airplanes. A Centurion-class aircraft can travel for a long time at great altitudes without refueling. There is no pilot on board because it is remote-controlled and powered by solar energy.

The plane is being used to test long-distance solar power technologies and serves as a prototype for future solar-powered aircraft that may carry out scientific research or relay telecommunications signals.

The Centurion shares a similar design with the Pathfinder, another solar-powered airplane, but has a much greater wingspan—206 feet as opposed to the Pathfinder’s 98 feet and the Pathfinder-121 Plus’s feet.

4. ZEPHYR
Zephyr is another high-altitude communication platform that uses solar power and ‘low drag aerodynamics’ to fly for months at an altitude of 132,000 feet. The aircraft has a wingspan of 12 meters, and its wings are equipped with solar cells that produce 1 kW of power.

The power generated is used to drive five motors that propel the aircraft to a speed of 70 meters per second, which is equivalent to 155 mph.

5. Pathfinder Plus

It is also one of the best Solar Airplanes. The Pathfinder is a little, light airplane that uses solar power to fly for extended periods of time at great altitudes. Electricity is supplied to the aircraft’s motors, electronics, and communication systems by solar panels on the upper wing surface.

The Pathfinder also has a battery backup that permits several additional hours of flight after dusk. The aircraft spins by varying the speed of its motors while flying slowly, at about 15 to 25 mph.

6. The Challenger
The Solar Challenger is an improved version of the ‘Gossamer Penguin’ designed to fly from Paris to England. The airplane can fly really high up to 12,000 feet using 16,128 special cells called photovoltaic cells.

These cells can produce a lot of energy, specifically 2,600 watts. Its success gave way to the High Altitude Solar (HALSOL) drone project.

7. Sky Sailor
The Sky Sailor is a tiny solar-powered aircraft created to explore on its own. Its wings are covered with solar cells that collect energy from the sun to power the airplane’s propulsion system and control electronics. The excess energy is stored in a battery to be used during the night when there is no sunlight available.

The project was initiated in 2004 when the European Space Agency hired them to research the possibility of a solar-powered airplane for Martian exploration. The first prototype of the Sky Sailor has a wingspan of 3.2 meters and weighs 2.6 kg.

It is equipped with 216 silicone solar cells that provide up to 90 W of power during summer at noon. The airplane’s power consumption is 16 W during level flight.

8. Sunseeker
The Sunseeker is a solar-powered airplane that was designed by Eric Raymond, who was inspired by previous solar airplane projects such as the Solar Riser, Solar Challenger, and Musculair II.

The Sunseeker has a wingspan of 71 feet and is powered by a 7-horsepower electric motor that is connected to a propeller. The airplane is covered in solar cells, which provide energy to the motor and also recharge the batteries that power the airplane at night.

In 1990, the Sunseeker set an altitude record for solar-powered airplanes by reaching an altitude of 14,337 feet. The airplane has also set distance records, including a flight of 399 miles in 1993.

The Sunseeker has been used for research, education, and publicity purposes, and it has played a significant role in advancing the field of solar aviation.
