How To Increase Your Laptop's Battery Life

Modern graphic intensive operating systems and resource hungry applications are cutting down the life of your laptop’s battery every day. Generally most laptops claim to have 4-6 hours of battery life but in real it comes to 50% of the promised backup time. Most of the laptop manufacturers have made great effort in last few years to increase the efficiency of their products, even though the most efficient modern machines don’t last long enough for many users.

1. Turn Down Screen Brightness

Almost all laptops come with the ability to dim the screen brightness. The display system takes 50% of your available battery and lower brightness would ensure you more battery life.

2. Defrag regularly

Make your hard drive as efficient as possible by defragging it regularly. However avoid to do it when your laptop is running on battery power.

3. Add more RAM

By adding RAM to a computer that is always swapping/thrashing, you’ll save a noticeable about of battery life.

4. Disable networking

If you’re not using the Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, turn them off. Most laptops either have a physical button or a key combination that will allow you to quickly enable or disable them.

5. Disable External devices

Disconnect all external devices like PC Card modems, Firewire, USB devices and optical drives. Use the notebook touchpad instead of an external mouse.

6. Keep temperature down

Temperature is a silent killer. Your laptop operates more efficiently when it’s cooler. Undue heat kills off a battery slowly but surely. Never use your PC on a blanket or soft surface where airflow is restricted.
